Evolutionarily, humans are hunters and gatherers. Hence it comes as no surprise to see that diseases have skyrocketed in the past century due to our limited movement and mobility. We are biologically inclined to move in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and with the restrictions of moving within the workplace, it is important to try and stay as active as we can throughout the day. Here are some easy way to include physical activity in your work day.

  1. Take the stairs, or walk at least part of your work journey: find a way to make your way to work more active, that might mean getting off a few stations before your destination, or taking the stairs when you can, every step counts!
  2. Have standing or walking meetings: If you feel a long discussion coming along, suggest you have it while taking a walk.
  3. Stretch every 30 minutes: set a timer, and stretch your arms, legs, and back every 30 minutes. That will increase your blood flow and decrease cramping.
  4. Instead of typing it, say it: in the land of slack, we rarely need any reason to get off our desks. However, walking towards your coworker will ensure you get some steps in!
  5. Find a nearby gym, get a corporate membership, and encourage your coworkers to sign up with you: That will create a more active lifestyle in the workplace, and will promote increased physical activity.
  6. Take a moving break: literally, create a break for moving. You can walk back and forth in your office, or go down the flight of stairs and back up.
  7. Try a standing desk: although it might be pricey, a standing desk goes a long way in promoting your movement.
  8. Use ankle weights and move your legs while you’re sitting down: this will promote some muscle mass growth on your legs. You can also use the ankle weights in your moving break!
